International/Online Club Qualify as a 501(c)(7)
« on: January 12, 2022, 02:36:00 pm »
I'm an officer of a club that meets almost entirely online with a number of international club members. This year a number of us thought it was about time we started getting serious with our club and start offering shirts and other club merch. Unfortunately, we're not sure about the best course of action. Collecting dues online via PayPal or Venmo seems questionable from a legal standpoint.

So we'd like to register our club with the IRS as a non-profit. We're not sure if we qualify as a 501(c)(7) Social Club because our meetings are online and about 10% of our members are international. Could we meet in-person a couple times a year and/or expel non-US residents? Or are international members acceptable because they'd be contributing a small percent of dues?

Are there any other online clubs here that have qualified as a 501(c)(7) or similar non-profit?
