Does every state poke sport at the state to the south?
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:35:04 pm »
I've lived in Oregon for a while and Oregonians definitely like to poke sport at California.  I also lived in Indianapolis for a while and Kentuckians are definitely made fun of.  I grew up near St Louis, MO and, same thing, Arkansas is the target.  My favorite jab of all is the old Missouri joke that if you cut the bootheel off of Missouri and give it to Arkansas then the IQ of both states would go up 50 points. Sadly, the gulf states have nothing to laugh about  :(

Is this true all over, or have I just randomly run into the 3 states that do this?  Iowans- lay some anti-Missouri smack on me.  Any other funnies out there?

I think you just habitually live north of crappy states.  I never lived in any of the states you listed but commonly make fun of Californians, Kentuckians and Arkansas just the same.

For what it's worth, many Texans talk a lot of crap about our southern neighbor Mexico as well... then again, theres a joke about our northern neighbor along the lines of "Why doesn't Texas fall into the gulf?  because Oklahoma sucks".

I guess I am just an equal opportunity offender.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and we always made fun of people from New Jersey. Course that's east, not west. Now I live in Alabama and Alabama deserves to be made fun of. And no one is south of us.

Sure, pretend you never made fun of West Virginia...

There was a film, a long time ago I think, that said that Texas is just "Baja Oklahoma".

As far as states go, in my homestate of Indiana, the northerners would make fun of the southern part of the state.  Now that I live in Michigan, I don't see much difference around Indiana.  Or maybe it was that time living in Germany that made the differences around the US seem smaller?

Edit - In Michigan the Yoopers (Upper Peninsula) call the people in the Lower Peninsula "Trolls"  as they live below the MacinaC Bridge.

My parents generation grew up in NJ and we made many trips there in the old family truckster.  I remember all the "coicles".  In recent years, they built circles all over Indy (esp north burbs) and they keep building em around Portlland, even way out in rural communities.  Seems like alot of money for little benefit.

Here in Nebraska we always make fun of the yokels down in Kansas.  Actually we don't make that much fun of Kansas because there is absolutely nothing there to make fun of or otherwise.  :)

I live in Wisconsin and we poke fun at Illinois.  They are called FIBs.  With that said I would have to say that it is true  :P
Although, we do refer to Upper Michigan as Yoopers.

I don't ever remember making fun of southerners in Baltimore, but then again everybody had family down south.

WV was the more popular target. NJ would have been too, but I don't think we actually believed it existed.

Yeah, 63.  Suck it.

We never had the Jersey accent, I think because we lived far enough from NYC and Philly.  I was on LBI for highschool - Surf City.  But I was born in Queens, lived on Governor's Island, then moved to Plainfield, Lavallette, North Brunswick, Huegenot NY, and Surf City.  We moved a lot. :)
