Preferred west coast IPA final gravity?
« on: January 09, 2022, 06:08:44 pm »
Just wondering what everybody’s preferred West Coast IPA final gravity is?  I usually use 001 and they come out dry between 1.010 and 1.008 mashing at 150-152.  I want to give it a little more body and realize I could just mash higher, but whenever I use 007, I usually get about 1.014 mashing at 152 (usually in porters or stouts—— Way different Grain bill compared to IPA I know.)…… so thinking of doing my next IPA with 007.
I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.

That depends on the beer. 1.010 to 1.012 FG means something quite different for a 5.5% IPA than it does for a 7.5% IPA.

In the same wort fermented under the same conditions you can expect the FG with 001 and 007 to be within 1 point of each other.
Beer is my bucket list,

I agree with both of these points. Also, to be perfectly honest, I couldn't pick out a 2 point difference in FG in most beers. 001 and 007 both make excellent WCIPA's. In this style I wouldn't use attenuation as the deciding factor in choosing between the two.

I use 007 myself and my target is 1.012. I tend to mash around 152 for 75-90 minutes. I’m not a fan of 001 for an IPA.
