Let's talk Grass
« on: September 18, 2010, 02:23:34 am »
My St Augustine has nearly bounced back completely from the terrible drought last year due to a strategy of benign neglect, prayers, poison and infrequent but tactically last moment waterings and judicious use of the mower. The recent rains have helped tremendously it looks nice and I'm closing in on being weed-free. Well truthfully that'll never happen but one can dream...

OK I'll start:

When is the best time to apply hormonal treatments to kill seasonal weeds like Thistle and Crab grass? I couldn't keep up with the thistles when it got cooler last year.

Any lawn tips? Weed woes?

My lawn has been dead all season. Thats just the way I like it. I think I had the lawn mower out twice all season.

There are more important things to do in the backyard.

Mine's still in rough shape.  This is the first full season we've been in this house and it's suffering from years of neglect.  Plus the lack of rain hasn't helped.  Last time I mowed it was like mowing dirt in places.  Presuming I find the time to get around to it I'm going to overseed it again this year.  Maybe toss a little topsoil over the top as well and then water the hell out of it.

Euge I had Great results this year from a product I got from the county weed n pest.
It really targets canada thistle and wipes it out nicely...it is called Redeem.  There are some
constraints you will want to study up on....like deadly to conifer trees....soil residules etc...

Your thistle needs to be up 3-4 pairs of leaves for exposure to be effective.

Generally the best time of the year here, is in the fall because that is when the plant
tries to pull nutrients into the root for the winter.  Pulls the poison in with that mechanism.

I apply it to each thistle (spot spray)using a plastic quart hand held spray pump bottle.  Where it contacts
surrounding foilage ....yes grass....it affects it too.

Anyone klnow how to effectively kill field bind weed?????

I am terribly disappointed by the content of this thread.
