You guys ever transfer whirlpool hops to the ferementer?
« on: March 04, 2022, 07:36:05 pm »
I have a recipe that calls for a 3oz hopstand at 170F for 30 mins. I usually chill to 75F afterwards and then dump into the fermenter. The whirlpool hops only get used for 30 minutes. Seems like a waste so wondered about putting the whirlpool hops in a bag and then just dropping the bag into the fermenter after trasferring the wort. Everything is already boiled/sanitized so infection shouldn't be a problem. Is there anything left to derive from the hops after 30 minutes?

Nah. You got the oils you want from them at WP.

I try to limit trĂ¼b from getting into the fermenter which includes the spent hops.

I transfer pretty much everything from the kettle into the fermenter with no ill effects. I just do it for simplicity - not for additional hop oils.

I do the same. Haven't noticed any vegetal / off flavors, but I wouldn't say it adds noticeable flavor or aroma.

Thanks all. Sounds like they are pretty well used after the 30 minutes.
