Label Peelers...check those dates!
« on: May 04, 2022, 06:17:51 pm »
A while back I bought a bunch of yeast from Label Peelers. S-189, W-34/70, Diamond Lager, S-05, etc.

I did not inspect each yeast package, instead they were placed in the fridge for future use.

Recently I went to get some yeast from the fridge, and here is what I discovered...surprised is an understatement. I have no receipt, or they would be sent back. Just a heads up to all of you!

Wow! That’s crazy old.

I have never gotten an expired pack from Label Peelers. I have gotten a few within a few months of expiration.

September - 2007. Unbelievable. I was not even brewing actively during that time.
How could a brew supply house have stock this old? And furthermore, how could they knowingly sell it to a customer?

Purchased late last summer. Bought a bunch of yeast at that time. They were having a sale.

I been burned before. Now I check dates on any yeast that is shipped to me or that I buy at a homebrew shop. I go to Midwest once in a while and now they don't let customers grab their own yeast, it's behind the register. I suspect customers were grabbing the freshest yeast and leaving the old stuff behind.

I'd be curious to see if it comes alive in a starter. If it does, dry yeast lasts a lot longer than expected.

It was the name for US05 before they were sued and had to change it to US05

Dang. I've brewed good beer with 5 year old dry yeast, but 15 is REALLY pushing it. I received slightly out of date dry yeast from a different company a long time ago. When I emailed them they told me dry yeast lasts a long time. I agreed, but told them if I had gone in person I would have bought newer yeast or at least expected a discount. They sent me fresher yeast.
FYI: when I bought dry yeast from Label Peelers the dates were fine.

Any thoughts on this one? Throw in the trash? Bake bread? Take a long shot chance on an Ale?

And...how did this end up being delivered to me? 15 year old yeast?

Dry yeast can last a long time past date if stored properly.  But you don't know this was.  And 15 years is more than I'd be comfortable with.  I'd toss it.

Vintage... they changed the name right after that was made.  I bought Diamond lager yeast from them and while it wasn't expired, I didn't like the results and thought it smelled off for dry yeast.  This makes me question where exactly they are getting their yeast and how it's stored, especially given how cheap they sell it.
