British hops
« on: May 08, 2022, 03:26:12 pm »
Does any home brew shop carry a good selection of British hops? Most places seem to limit themselves to golding, challenger, and fuggle.

I found the same thing.

So, though not British, I decided to branch out in my latest Pub Ale with Loral. Supposedly floral + lemon = Loral which sounded ‘British-y’ to me.

Turns out it made a nice pint.

It's been hard for me to find a wide selection beyond those you mention.  For the less common ones, FH Steinbart has Bramling Cross & Target; Yakima Valley sometimes has Target, Jester, First Gold (they have a Mystic & Harlequin too, that I know nothing about); Northern Brewer -- the site-- has Northdown, First Gold, a few others, but their prices can be high.  MoreBeer can be hit or miss on less common hops.  I could've sworn I saw Bramling-Cross on Farmhouse before, but not now.  I've been wanting to try Sussex too, but I never see it.

I agree that it would be cool for us in the states to be able to get a wide range of UK hops all in one place.

Do they list harvest year?  When it comes to hops freshness is key for me.

No, but I've used almost five year old hops, that were stored in my freezer, with good results.
I just emailed them asking about the harvest year.

They don't look to be available right now but I'm pretty sure hopsdirect usually carries a few. I bought some First Gold from them a few years back.

Hop Heaven is where I get my import hops from. I stock up for the year over the winter, but I think Ted has an ebay shop as well for "spot" buys.

The EKG and fuggle are labeled 2020, the others have no date.
