I'm intrigued by adding it to bread, but can someone give me an idea of quantities?

My recipe is pretty similar to thirdhand's: http://seanterrill.com/2010/01/20/i-have-made-bread/ I'm munching on some right now, in fact. Oatmeal stout grist, probably my favorite so far.

Unfortunately our fascist neighborhood association doesn't allow composting, so all but a tiny fraction goes in the trash.
Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

I throw all of mine in the trash, but I should really start composting it.  I don't want to encourage deer in my yard though, they like to eat my other plants too much (they "pruned" my new plum tree, the bastards).  And there's too much to feed to the worms.

I put an ad on Craigslist for the local chicken farmers.  Now, I get a dozen eggs as a barter every other brew........ (10 gallons each)

I'm stealing that idea. Thanks.

That's a fantastic idea. Perhaps not many chicken farmers in Denver, but who knows! If that doesn't work i will start dumping it in the neighbor's yard :)

Mine ends up in the garden out back. It will stink big time for a few days.

If you spread it out, it stinks less... or maybe my garden is far enough from the house that I don't notice.  When I dump it in the composter, it stinks like a dead body.

Throw it in the compost pile and cover it with diirt - it won't stink and the worms will love it.

Compost pile.  Guess it's far enough away from the house, I've never noticed too bad a smell.

Predominant wind is from the west....neighbor to the east has a mountain of horse manooch...
when the wind comes from the east....I cringe....it reeks....but since most of the time I am UP wind
from that big mountain, I enjoy the chance to share the aroma from my compost pile...that is where
the spent stuff goes.... :P

I dump it in the back yard at my in-laws. I once forgot about it for about a week in the garage. I'll never do that again.

As far as the dog biscuits go, make sure that there are NO HOPS in there. Yeah I know spent grain from
a mash, but you never know who is going for that crazy hop bomb IPA...It causes fatal hyper-thermia in
dogs...or some dogs. Basically a fever with a vengeance. Most dogs don't care about the hop vines and
what not, but sweeten the deal with spent grain and all bets are off.

Just and FYI!

Throw it in the compost pile and cover it with diirt - it won't stink and the worms will love it.
Also, since the grain will only stink if it goes anaerobic, there are a number of other things you can do:
spread it thin over a wide area, like using it as a thin mulch over a garden,
mix it in with a lot of dry, fluffy stuff, like fall leaves,
turn it over every day or two to mix air into it, until it starts to dry out and break down,
mix it into the compost pile well, so that it doesn't compact and breaks down quickly.

I've been composting grain for years and it never smells unless I just dump it onto the top of the pile and leave it there for a few days.

If I was in a situation like a10t2, with an overzealous neighborhood association, I'd use it as mulch.  You're still composting it but it's not "compost", it's "mulch".

I can see a large "compost pile" being a problem with the NA, but what about a "barrel composter" in the backyard? Who would see it and even know what it is?

I dump mine in a plastic 55 gal drum and put the keep the lid on with one of the vents cracked. One of the days I'm going to have  mulch^2.

I dump it on my garden. It makes great black soil.

Let it cool off, then spread it somewhere on the lawn that needs a "pick up." Two weeks later, and you can spot the difference. Spread it thin and you'll have less of an odor problem.
