I've been working on the WOT series for several years.  I don't know if I'll get all the way through it or lose interest...I'm digging all the alternatives suggested here.

If you are into the post-apocalypse genre of fantasy at all, find the "Horseclans" novels by Robert Adams.

Classic High Fantasy would be ER Eddison: "The Worm Ouroboros" (1922) and the Zimiamvia Trilogy - "Mistress of Mistresses," "A Fish Dinner in Memison" and "The Mezentian Gate."

The "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" stories by Fritz Lieber for "Low" fantasy, and (of course) the worrks of Robert E Howard.

Travel to alternate worlds? "The Doomfarers of Coramonde" and "The Starfollowers of Coramonde" by Brian Daley.

The "Dragonrider" novels by Anne McCaffrey, The "Deryni" novels by Kathryn Kurtz...any number of novels revolving around the Arthurian mythos...

Lots of good stuff to read within the big tent of fantasy: L Sprague de Camp, Poul Anderson, Joy Chant, John Dalmas, Lynn Abbey, L Frank Baum, Roger Zelazny, TH White...

I've really enjoyed anything by Robert J Sawyer.  He's SF/Future-fiction.  I highly recommend The Hominds series - about portal opening between modern Earth and a parallel universe where Neanderthals are the intelligent hominid to survive past the ice age.

+1, I've got about all of Sawyer's books (Flashforward is his and, as you'd expect, the book is eons better than TV).  With his books, though, you do need to take his "socialist utopia" asides with a grain of salt.

Also check out Peter F. Hamilton's "Pandora's Star" + "Judas Unchained" series.  It's just two books but they're each almost 1000 pages.

A classic series that falls somewhere between fantasy and Sci-fi is the Amber books by Roger Zelazny.  I highly recommend them.

Another more recent "series" is the Chalion books by Lois McMaster Bujold.  The three books are linked by setting but each is a self-contained story with new characters.  Refreshing after all these epic 10 book series.

Also wanted to weigh in on the Jordan books:  I agree that the series got bogged down, but the new author (Brandon Sanderson,) has really moved the series toward some resolution.  Give it a chance!

I couldn't even finish the Flashforward TV show, but the book was excellent.  I've met the man and he's really a down to earth, friendly guy.  The 'socialist utopia' themes seem to be commen in this type of fiction, but I found that Sawyer's work wasn't so blatently in your face as some authors I have read.

Got to mention the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, though only the first book, The Name of the Wind, is out so far. Eagerly awaiting the rest. Awesome read, very creative & well written.

I forgot those.  They are very good reads.
