where do I buy bulk grain
« on: October 15, 2010, 04:38:36 pm »
I recently moved from the home brew mecca of Portland, Oregon to the much smaller home brew mecca of Augusta, Maine.
I have been to a few home brew shops in the area and the ingredients do not seem to turn over very fast and the bulk grain prices aren't much of a discount.  So, I am looking for a home brew shop either online or otherwise that I can buy bulk ingredients from.

Anyone have a shop or online store they would recommend?

As always thanks in advance for your help.

By far your best option is to find a local brewpub that will let you add a few sacks to their orders.

You can buy sacks of grain online, but with shipping the LHBS will likely be cheaper.

That's how I've done it for years.  Or there may be a homebrew club that can put together bulk orders, my club does that periodically.

What is a good price for a 55lb sack of Rahr 2 row? I need to start buying in bulk, but I dont know what reasonable prices are.

When I get in on a bulk buy through the club, I can get it for about $28.

wow. that is really cheap. My LHBS has them for 45......

How do you go about asking a brewpup/brewery to get in on a purchase. My LHBS is connected to a brewpub, so I dont think they will be of any help b/c they will just tell me to go next door and buy from there. But, I live in Denver so there are brewpubs/breweries aplenty

I'd suggest going into the brewpub & ordering a beer. Then ask if the brewer's available. Talk with him a while and then say, "uh, by the way, would it be possible.........."

if you don't have a lhbs you can buy from country malt group which would be fairly close to your new pad.  i'm fairly sure they are still taking new homebrew customers though for a limited time.

According to the letter they sent out awhile back they were going to stop accepting new homebrew customers as of Sept 30th.

Our homebrew club did a group buy with a brewpub and he ended up saving $$ too because the shipping/bag was less.

I buy from my local Brewpub. $25 a 50# sack of any Briess product. Hops from Hopsdirect.com and yeast from a local semi-homebrew shop that is really a pool spa place but, hey it works!

I've read some people have called after that date and still got their order in.  They suggested that you don't mention from the very beginning that you are a homebrewer...worth a shot.

I tried to order a full palate of grain from NCM ~ 8 months ago and the freight was like 750 bucks to Las Cruces NM. Just couldn't justify it. I'm still on their list though if I ever get back to civilization as I knew it ::)
