Where to buy/order chocolate/cacao nibs from
« on: October 07, 2010, 08:36:08 am »
Last year I got some chocolate nibs from a vendor at the GABF that I put into my double chocolate stout.  The vendor wasn't at the GABF this year.  Where can I buy/order some nibs from?  I live in the Denver area.

You can get them online here...unfortunately it doesn't look like there are any stores in Colorado that carry them.

I know stomp them grapes started carrying cacao nibs - just saw them on the shelf the other day.  They're at I-70 & Pecos more or less.

More beer has them in the spice section.

Thanks all!  I will check out these places.  I think Tcho was the vendor who gave me some last year at the GABF.

They were presenters at the NHC in Oakland, too.  They seemed like really enthusiastic people, wanting to experiment with all kinds of beer and chocolate.

I got some off of RebelBrewers site.  I open up the packet of nibs and they smelled amazing.

http://www.rebelbrewer.com/shoppingcart/categories/Brewing-Ingredients/Additives%2C-Finings%2C-Flavorings-etc./Herbs%2C-Spices%2C-Wood-etc./

How much would one use per gallon?  I was going to add it to 3 gallons of sweet stout, maybe along with a chopped up square of dark chocolate and some vanilla bean (well the bean was going to soak in vodka for a week and the liquid added to taste at bottling).

For any and all brewing spices, I recommend you check out the two big spice merchants:  Penzeys and "The Spice House"  (www.penzeys.com, www.thespicehouse.com).  You will find very high-quality spices at extremely reasonable prices.

If you're in the Chicago/Milwaukee area, you can stop by one of the spice house's stores.  Penzys has some here and there as well.  Personally, I prefer The Spice House, because they'll sell you bulk spices without any jars/etc, which is great for refilling jars or if you plan to use it quickly (e.g. for a brewing recipe).

I also recommend them for cooking, needless to say.  Cheaper than the grocery store, and higher quality.  Can't be beat.

I grow them in my yard.  They are in season now.  I had one tree when I moved in; grew a dozen more from seeds from that original tree.

We break open the pods and pull out the seeds (nibs).  De-fuzz the seeds, put them in a pot of cool water, bring to a boil, remove from the heat and drain when the seed skins split (between 5 to 10 minutes after boil starts).  Shell and eat.  YUM!

If over-indulgining on boiled nibs one would be well advised not to stray too far from the WC...

Good timing on this thread.  I think I've just about decided to try a Mocha Porter and was thinking about where to order the nibs from.  When I searched the penzy's site though nothing came back.  The Spice House has roasted cacao nibs.  I guess that's what I want.
