dont forget the wasabi!

I have a friend who grows wasabi in a stream on his property.  He lives at about 2000ft up the windward side of Mauna Kea.  We've tried growing it down here at sea level, but it's too warm in the summer months.

Fresh wasabi is a real treat.  Much more flavorful and complex than the faux stuff made with horseradish, mustard and green food dye.

I have nothing against horseradish.  I grow it myself and love it.  But real wasabi compared to the faux stuff is like a fine craft-brewed beer compared to a can of Milwaukee's Best.

I'll start the rice cooker. You bring the beer!  ;)

As far as wasabi goes, I've never had the chance to have the real thing. My understanding is it is quite rare here in the states. I am seriously going to consider bringing spam sushi on my next back packing trip though. Just got to figure out how to do the rice without burning all my gas. Already have the dry wasabi powder.  :)

Spam musubi is the ultimate in pack food.  Make it up before you go, wrap it in plastic wrap and take it out to eat when you are hungry.  They will last a couple of days without refrigeration.  A bit of aging time wrapped up in plastic wrap is beneficial.  The nori comes in dry sheets and needs some time to absorb moisture from the rice and spam.

Musubi is sold pretty much everywhere here in Hawaii... even 7-11 has spam musubi.  Going price, $1/roll.  Surprisingly tasty and satisfying.  Cheap good eats!  The spam-rice-nori combination of flavors is synergistic.  Wasabi is not an usual addition, but it's your musubi  - go for whatever you think you'll enjoy.

Musubi rocks. I've got two kinds of furikake to go with it if so desired.
