The finally broke here in Iowa yesterday.  Daily highs in the 80's instead of high 90s to 100+.  It may even rain.

My wife's family is coming for Christmas in Jul.. er.. August this weekend so the cooler weather is a nice occurrence.

Where the heck are we going?  And what's with this hand basket?

You guys do an Xmas in July (August really) too huh?  My family's is the weekend of the 13th.  So glad the weather finally broke here.  Felt nice biking to work in 73 degree weather instead of over 80 and super humid.  Even had my bedroom window open last night, loved it.  I live in Iowa City, by the way.

Too many of her her relatives live too far away.  It is terribly difficult for them to make the drive in December as they have little babies.  Iowa (I'm in Des Moines, the rest who are in Iowa live in the far NW corner (Orange City/Sioux Center areas).  Between ice and snow storms that time of year, it just never works out.

Friday I will be putting up a tree, putting the lighted inflatable snow men out front and watching my kids put out Christmas decorations.  I drew the line when my wife asked if I would put up the icicle lights.  8^[  I'll play along but only so far.

Ah dang it's only getting hotter here. Gonna be 100 heat index by noon today. I'm watering my foundation.

Heat index? What's the wind-chill factor going to be?  WTF?
What's the thermometer say?

It says it is 97 degrees right now with a heat index of 103. We haven't even hit the hottest part of the day. And it'll be this way all the way through next week and beyond.

Is there some kind of new-fangle thermometer that has a wind-chill table of contents in front and a heat index in the back?

You can get "Web Enabled Weather Stations" that will display all that stuff on a webpage for you.  A buddy at work has one at his house and he get up to the second weather info from his desk at the office (I don't know why this is important to him but he can).  The formulas are also available so you can punch in real temp, humidity, and such and get a "fells like" number.

I usually just go with the old standard scale of Hot, Damn Hot and OMG!!! Why did we start this job today? Hot.

Sounds to me like wind chill and heat index are just multipliers for the misery index.

Yeah I've seen those.  Pretty amusing.  Way too many relevant variables ignored.  Voodoo science.

Take a look at the numbers.  A typical Central Florida afternoon, 95° F with 90% relative humidity, in the shade, feels like 141° F.  Yeah right.  How long can one live in 141° F?

Pele is rearranging the furniture again.  I can see the firey glow on the clouds above this lava flow out of the window of my loft as I write this.

Hawaii!

EDIT:  this picture updates every 10 minutes.  No glow can be seen during daylight hours.

Well believe it or not it's still hotter than the gates of Hades here. Today will be day 59 over 100F this year, normal is around 20 days over 100. And it's really humid, it rains all around us but just not here.  This morning I was mowing the dirt and notices smoke coming ot of the mountains again, I didn't think there was anything up there left to burn.

Pele has left her rift zone home @ Pu`u `O`o and is heading downslope towards the ocean.  When she finds the lava tube subway she will be down on the coastal plain in no time, and then into the ocean once again soon thereafter.

I get my best photos and videos when it's a mix of molten earth, water, wind and fire!  Yeah baby!  Laissez le bon temp rouler!

It feels like Pele is living in my town.  Yesterday the official thermometer broke here but it was 107, day 61 of over 100F so far this year, and today will be day 62.  Normal is around 20 days over 100F.  If we hadn't had so much rain last year I'm sure we'd be rationing water by now.
