I brewed a Black IPA a few weeks ago.  It turned out great.  As suggested by my wife we're calling "Darker Shade of Pale", with a nod to Procol Harum.

Ha! This weekend I am brewing a "Paler Shade of Ale" as my own nod to Procol Harum ::)

I recently brewed a double 'IBA' (Imperial Black Ale). In a 5.5 gal recipe I used .75 lbs of 420L Carafa Special II as my dark grain because I didn't want much if any roasted flavor to come through. It has turned out to be one of the best beers I've ever had!!!  9.5% abv - SRM 26.3 - IBU's 302.5 (calculated)

I did an all Centennial Black IPA a while back...used sinamar and debittered black malt, and it still came out a bit too roasty (think schwarzbier) for me, because in my mind I was going to brew a beer that looked like a stout but tasted like an IPA.  Basically the point of the beer was to trick my friends who had themselves believing that they drank "real, strong beer" (Guinness) when they couldn't handle a modest IPA!  :D

I ended up just enjoying a slightly roasty IPA and brewed a chipotle IPA to REALLY trick them!  :D  Once I provided some friends having a party with four bottles of the same and challenged them to see who could down their 12oz the fastest.  Only two finished...I wish I could have been there.

A friend of mine does a beer periodically called "Black Perle" DIPA and it pretty much has one of the dumbest hop schedules I've ever seen. (The full recipe can be found in the Everything Homebrewing Book.)

This is for a 5.5 gallon batch:

2.00 ounces Chinook (14.3 percent AA) Whole—for 90 minutes
1.00 ounce Perle (13.0 percent AA) Pellet—for 90 minutes

Yes indeedly it is amazingly comical. Aside from it being a good beer, I included it in the book for the comical effect!

As for the dry hops, you'd think there would be some, but the notes I was provided didn't have any!

One could certainly not get bored during that brew.

This recipe looks like the "60 minute IPA" where they add some hops every minute for full hour.
This thing is probably so bitter, one can't even feel any malt or even hops for that matter. IMO this much hops would just overwhelm each other and result in tasting like bitter over-boiled spinach.
That's just what I think, correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're talking the Black Perle... actually it was surprisingly drinkable and approachable. Yes, you're not going to be able to hand it off to a person who doesn't already like bitter beers, but it was well done.

11oz!?!?  :o

I just did some continuous hopping in my recent batch of The Red Hoptober...not quite as meticulous or methodical though....that's a tight schedule to keep, but damn I'm sure that hop profile is nice....

Curious how mine is going to turn out... ::)

Was just reading through the new issue of Zymurgy and read the "Another Great GABF" article.

Quote from: Jill Redding
Among the many diversions at the festival, the Brewers Studio Pavilion offered several educational seminars.  One of the seminars I attended was on "what's new in craft brewing."  Here's the scoop:

 - Black IPAs:  Stone head brewer Mitch Steele presented on this growing style, which he described as a "black beer that has more in common with a schwarzbier, and is hopped like an IPA."
