Storing Crushed Grains
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:52:13 am »
How long can you store crushed grains without ill effects?  I have 3# of specialty grains each in separate bags that are gonna have to hold off for at least a month.  I don't have a vacuum sealer.  Will they be OK?  TIA and Merry Christmas everyone!

A month is no big deal. If you can put them in a freezer that would be best.

Really?  Isn't there a concern for condensation when you take it out?

Hmm... maybe? My thinking on that has always been that anything I'm not using is only outside the freezer for a few minutes, and anything I'm going to brew with is going to get wet anyway. Subjectively, I've never seen ice crystals on my frozen grains or anything.

I've never tried freezing, so that's why I asked.  I just keep 'em in a tightly sealed paper bag inside a plastic bag in a cool room.

In platic ziploc bags with the air removed then into Rubbermaid totes or the like work well. Vacuum sealing is ideal longer term storage for crushed grain IMHO.

I've stored specialty malts crushed and in ziplock bags for over a year and they seem to be fine.  I just used the last of some pale chocolate and it smelled as good as the day I bought it.  YMMV.   ???

+1.  FWIW...  Hops & leftover wort (used for starters) go in the freezer.  Yeast goes in the fridge & everything else at room temp (basement is usually 65F) & dry in plastic bags & then in 5 gallon buckets with rubber seals.
If Homebrew & BBQ aren't the answer, then you're askin' the wrong questions... Cheers!!!
