I had to check my list.  Looks like the next one on deck is my 4th attempt at a Pilsner.

Just completed my first brew of 2011...a dunkel, kind of a cross between Munich and Czech.  Exceeded both my OG and volume expectations for 88% efficiency.  I was shooting for 5.5 gal. at 1.056 and got 5.75 gal. at 1.062. Hope that's a harbinger for the rest of the year!

Just finished brewing a robust porter. Has an OG of 1.060 which is just about what I wanted. Good start of the year so far.

I think that is really great that she likes an American PA.  Something different?
Are you stationed in Germany?  I lived there in 98-99, and have a taste for German beers now, for some reason.

Edit: I see you are there.  I met up with Terry Snow while in Bamberg.  He used to post on tech talk often.  Ever run into him?

What does everyone out there have planned for their first brew of 2011?  I'm planning to kick off 2011 with a big Tripel and hoping to use the yeast cake from that to brew a quad

Happy New Year!
FYI, many recommend against using yeast from any higher gravity beer (>1.060) to brew another beer. The high alcohol stresses the yeast, and they usually struggle in the second batch. I tried it once - never again.

Gonna be an Old Burton/Barleywine for me.
I brew early in the year for the holidays each year but got a late start on the 2010 holiday brew due to work/travel schedules.  Feels good to be brewing the  2011 version ins January again, like I used to.  It should be really nice by December gift giving time.
I'll  probably also brew another double batch sometime in February to blend with this batch (along with my usual  10 to 15% addition of the previous year's holiday brew, a tradition I've managed to keep alive since the early 90's).

For what it's worth, I've been re-using the yeast cakes from 'big' beers for many years without any issues.  I think a lot of it depends on how long you wait to re-use it...but in the last 20 years, I haven't had any issues with going back and forth from bigger to smaller beers, and back again (and then, back again).
Perhaps the choice of yeast strain matters  as well.
