Yeast Question. first batch
« on: February 03, 2011, 02:20:00 pm »
hello,

i am in the process of boiling my water for my first batch.  i bought a extract kit online and it was shipped to my house saturday.  i brought it in the house sat. night and didn't open the box like a dumbass and just opened it today and saw a "refrigerate asap" sticker on it.  it had a Wyeast Activator packet inside.   i smacked the pack to activate it and i wasn't sure if it would activate or not, so in the meantime i bought some dry yeast.  now the packet of the Wyeast has swelled and i am not sure if i should still use it or not because it was not refrigerated.  any help?

thanks

If it's swelled, use it.

If your smack pack swelled, then the yeast are alive and well.  Yeast survive well at ambient temps, but are kept cool for storage.  Use it quickly.
