Shelf life of crushed grain??
« on: January 23, 2011, 11:48:04 am »
I bought some grain on Thursday to brew with today. Something came up and I'm not able to brew today. My LHBS crushes the grain for me when I buy it so I'm sure the clock is ticking on that grain. Anyone know how long it will hold before it starts to diminish in quality? Can I wait til next weekend or should I try to squeeze it in during the week?

It will be fine for several weeks, as long as you keep it out of the humidity.
Even better would be to throw it in the freezer, but a week or two at room temp will be quite alright.

+1 to the freezer. It has a way of stopping time.

I dunno about the freezer...what about condensation when you take it out?  I've kept crushed grain in a tightly sealed plastic bag in a cool dry place for a couple months and it was fine when I used it.

Condensation when you take it out and put it in the mash tun? ;)

Just keep it in the freezer until ready to use and adjust your strike water temp to compensate for grain at 0F (or whatever temp you keep your freezer).
