I need a bit of help please . . .
« on: January 27, 2011, 03:12:54 pm »
My brother is getting married later this year.  He wants to rent a house for everyone to stay in, so something with 8+ bedrooms.  I know such house exist in NC on the Outer Banks, we go there every couple of years.  He's looking for some place different, but is having trouble finding places.

Criteria:
Big house
Oceanfront or close to it
North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida (not gulf coast)

Anyone have any ideas?  We're looking in the Wilmington NC area, Topsail Beach and such, but could use suggestions on other nice areas with monstrous beach houses.

It's not required, but if there is a good brewery or five nearby that would be awesome.

Man the coast of the Carolinas and GA just ain't the best place for tons of brews.

If I wanted beauty and solitude I'd head for Jeckyll Island, GA. Spanish Moss and all that jazz. I'm pretty sure there are some homes for rent.

As far as SC, Charleston has a pretty good beer culture running nowadays.

If you wanted beer centric I'd skip the beach and head for the mountains, Asheville, NC would be an awesome area for a wedding party. A trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway will rejuvenate the soul and Asheville is one thirsty place with plenty to soak up. I've never met anyone who has visited Asheville who didn't want to go back. That would be my suggestion or pick a nice beach house and get the beer on the way there.

You might look at Tybee Island ...which is Savannah Beach. It's a half hour from Savannah. Not a great beer town, but Moon River is a decent brewpub/restaurant and there are a number of decent beer bars in walking distance around downtown. Very picturesque.

Holden Beach, NC is my favorite spot... http://www.holden-beach.com/Content/default.asp  It's about 30-40 minutes south along the coast from Wilmington. Lots of rentals available, but book soon as the best and biggest ones go quick. I can't say I remember any breweries, but I'm usually there with all our kids, so don't get much of a chance to look. A great bar with wonderful seafood is Dock Street Oyster Bar in Wilmington. Check them out while you're there... http://dockstreetoysterbar.net/

FWIW - Wilmington has one brewpub and a couple of decent places for draft.

Savannah was also a thought I had, several good places for draft. Moon River can get super duper crowded and touristy with crazy long waits. Savannah is a beautiful place to visit.

Thanks guys!  Jekyll and Tybee don't seem to have the giant houses we're looking for, but Holden has some options.   Any more ideas, keep them coming please. :)

I know what you mean about the beer Mike, but we'll bring our own.  The bride wants beach, the bride gets beach.  The beer centric is just what I want, and I'm just the officiant. ;)

Tybee has some pretty large places. I'd sort of thought about planning a club trip up there but it never happened. Don't have the links anymore, but some googling of beach house rentals should turn them up.

There's big and then there's BIG.

We need 8 bedrooms minimum, and that assumes that one of the bedrooms has room for 6 kids under 10.

My brother has used VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owners) with good results on the coast of N. Carolina and Delaware.

I've seen that house.  No way is it worth more than 6K per week.  Even if it is haunted.

We've stayed on the outer banks pretty cheap in off season - after mid September, but everything tends to close down at the same time that the rates drop.  So, not much beer or restaurant action, but the beaches are nice and quiet.

The oldest kid is 10 I think.  :)  Maybe for Grandparents and kids ;D

Wait.  You're letting your brother get married? :'(
At least this time around she's not a raving b****. ;)

Thanks Jeff, vrbo has a lot of stuff and i like the search functions.  I don't know what he's going to decide, but I'm partial to NC's Southern Coast.  I haven't been down there.

We rented a house in Corrola a few years ago 100 yards from the ocean for what I think I remember was less than $350 for a week, but it was the late half of September when the rates drop.  The house was up on stilts and had at least three bedrooms.  Pretty nice, but lots of driving was necessary, since there's really only one road.
