WLP029 German Ale Yeast-vs-WY1007 German Ale/Kolsch Yeast
« on: February 04, 2011, 12:28:29 PM »
Just racked an Altbier from primary to keg, Kai's, except the yeast.  I couldn't get Wy1007, and I substituted WLP029 German Ale/Kolsch Yeast.  It did a great job, 1.047 to 1.012, clear.  I'm asking your advise though, should I harvest this yeast, or next time use Wy1007 German Ale Yeast.  I've seen you guys rave about Wy1007.  Does WLP029 pale in comparison?

AFAIAC, WY1007 is WAY better than 029.

Well Denny and I will disagree as I prefer WLP029 for Kolsch. I'm sure Denny will let me off the hook for this.  ;) ;D

For kolsch, no doubt you're correct, although to me WY2565 is the preferred kolsch yeast.  I definitely wouldn't use 1007 for a kolsch.

Agreed on that note.

+1 - WLP029 makes a very good kolsch and you can make an OK alt with it in a pinch, but WY1007 makes a superior Alt, given the choice. Whatever you do don't tell anyone from Dusseldorf you made an Alt with a kolsch yeast or you might receive a swift kick in your lederhosen!  ;)
