Round Barn Winery and Brewery in Union Pier, Michigan
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:58:35 am »
Hi all,

Anyone tried any of the beers and/or wines made at the Round Barn Winery and Brewery recently.  I am planning a trip to Michigan and wondering if it is worth thr drive.

Thanks for your help!

I haven't been for a couple years, but I thought it was worth the trip with some caveats.

It's a cool building and a scenic site.

Their wines are on par with what you will find in the area.  Not the greatest (I will admit to wine snobbery) and more expensive than what you might expect.

Their beer was pretty good.  I think they had a wheat beer on tap when I was there, and IIRC the price of a pint wasn't too bad (+/- $5). I didn't buy any bottled beer.

They had a grill going too and we got lunch for the kids and ate outside.

All in all it was very nice.  But it was more a nice experience than outstanding products.  I would definitely go back.

We also have enjoyed Domaine Berrien, which is close by.  They have a nice tasting room and you can get a bottle and some cheese and sit out on the deck.  But they do not brew beer.

The Livery in Benton Harbor is close to there and is supposed to be very good. I haven't made it there yet, but a friend whose opinion I trust raves about it. The town is a bit grim, though.

Even closer is Greenbush in Sawyer(exit 12) . I was at Greenbush shortly after they opened. The reviews say they are making good beer now.  Will have to go back and see.

The Livery is known for the IPAs. The German Pils I had and the Bo-Pils the wife had last summer were disappointing. The IPA was very good.

IIRC, there is also a small brewery in Michigan City.  Which is right on your route coming from Illinois.

I think I had a beer or two of theirs at a small riverside bar/restaurant near the casino.

I think it's the Shoreline Brewery.  Beyond their existence, I don't know much about them.

Was just in Union Pier last weekend.

The Shoreline Brewery is definitely open in Michigan City.

I also picked up a 6 of the Round Barn's Cocoa Stout.  Not bad.  I don't taste the cocoa, but I will keep trying.

Definitely a clean and well made stout, but the 6 was $12 so it ought to be.  More expensive that Bell's Kalamazoo Stout, which I drank right away.
