Batch Sparge for Wheat Beer?
« on: February 23, 2011, 12:21:05 pm »
I am a batch sparger but have never done a AG wheat beer before. A buddy of mine that was a fly sparger was killed in Iraq, and I would like to brew one of his recipes. Here is his recipe for a wheat porter, can I simply batch sparge this beer?

1.5lbs rice hulls
6.33lbs Wheat malt
2.75lbs Wheat malt, dark
.75lb Carmeal Wheat malt
.50lb Choc. Wheat malt

Thanks for any input.

Wow, can't remember ever seeing a 100% wheat malt recipe but sure, batch sparge should work just fine.

So just mash @ 153F for 1 hr like normal and then sparge?
I was worried that you have to do rests with the wheat.

You don't, but even if you did you could still do them mashing in a cooler and batch sparging.

I've never done a ferulic acid rest and always get plenty of spicy phenols.  No protein rest, you want it cloudy.  Although the dark beer won't show it anyway.  Be sure and give your impressions of this recipe, it looks interesting.  Wheat four ways.  Too bad they don't sell wheat hulls.

Really sorry to hear about your buddy.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.
I lost a good drinking buddy that day and one hell of a homebrewer. I've drank this beer several times before(it was one of his regulars) and always loved it. I just hope that I can do it justice.
