Do hops like warm soil?
« on: April 30, 2011, 11:30:55 am »
I have 2nd year hops up and I was going to put 1mm plastic around them ( the stuff I use in my pumpkin garden to prevent weeds and limit evaporation in the hot summer time.  I'd probably put a soaker hose under the plastic for watering, and the actual hop crowns would not be covered, maybe leaving 2" clearance around.

This plastic keeps the soil nice and warm, which pumpkins love, but do the hops do well in this environment?
I swore this year I will not spend all my free time weeding the gardens.

Thanks.

I'm guessing that you'd be fine, I've used straw which has a somewhat similar effect.  Just keep an eye on them.

Mine do best in warmer weather.  My bigger problem has been keeping them watered often enough.
Beer...Now there's a temporary solution!
