Best material to build potable water hose?
« on: March 31, 2011, 01:15:20 pm »
Need to build a potable water hose for the all grain set up in the garage.  What is the best material to use considering safety, health and taste?

PEX is great and not too difficult to use.

Expensive compared to an RV hose, though.

+1 on the RV hose. Sometimes HD or Lowes have white hoses specifically marked for drinking water.

Yeah, I got a potable water hose at Home Depot.  Not this one, but something similar.

I'm probably just stupid but I couldn't find a price on that link.   I had to buy one over here and it was around $12 for a ten foot hose.

That's a 25' hose and it told me it was $13.  I might have a cookie that links me to my local store though, and it said it's not for sale online.

you could also just buy a barbed hose attachment and clamp some siphon tubing on it, if you wanted to be super-ghetto - I think a barbed hose threaded attachment is ~$4 and then a worm clamp plus however many feet of 1/2" siphon tubing you need - maybe 5'?  <$7 total.

Nice! Thirteen bucks is worth not having to build it up. Thanks for the links!

Having just used a garden hose myself to top off the HLT, are there downsides other than potential infection in using hose water?

I mean, when I was a kid, we drank from the hose all the time, and I ended up alrightBAHDUCKSEVERYWHEREPURPLESHINYTHINGS

We did the same thing as kids and, maybe you don't remember it, but the water coming out definitely had a strong "hosey" taste.  That taste could end up being nasty in beer.

My first all-grain batch I filled the HLT with a garden hose, because I was boiling it to get rid of the chlorine anyway.  The mash tun was filled with brita filtered water from the tap.  The batch tasted like garden hose, it ended up down the drain.  My second batch I had a food grade hose.

Hopefully since I only added a couple liters it should be ok. We'll see... Either way I'll drink it, nothing can be worse than my last batch of "apricot" IPA with too much artificial flavoring. Blech.

Can food-grade hose stay outside? I.e., can I use it for my garden hose?

As far as I know, yes, you can use a food grade hose for a garden hose.  It might be more susceptible to UV light than a regular garden hose though, that might be my biggest concern.  There is a 25' food-grade hose for sale at Home Depot in the US for ~$13, that's worth keeping separate as far as I'm concerned.  But it's not sold online and I don't know what I would cost in France.
