[SwashBuckling Drunk]

Sometimes, when I click on a topic (or a page within a topic) I get a download labeled "index (#).php".  The #'s are labeled sequentially (every time it happens, the # is one higher than the previous download).  This seems to be random, but does happen in groups on specific dates.  Looking back, it happened on 12/20, 12/22, 3/19, 3/30 and today 3/31.  I'm running a Win 7 machine and Chrome browser.  This odd download even happened when I tried to post this message.  Nothing actually happens, it just downloads the file labeled "index (#).php"  I frequent a few discussion boards and have never seen this anywhere else.

Is anyone else experiencing something like this?

It was happening to me yesterday with The Pub link.  None of the others were affected.  Once I closed my browser (firefox) and came back in the problem was fixed.

No chance I'm hitting any other key.  The problem has gotten much worse.  I had to use MS Explorer just to make this post (first time I've used Explorer on this computer that's about a year and a half old).  The computer is well maintained and current for all updates.

Odd problem and interesting to see that others are also having the same issue.

We have a winner!  I cleared my cookies and cache which seems to have fixed the problem.  On another note- my browser is now smokin fast.  Like, I can't believe how fast it is.  As I researched this problem, I learned that Google Chrome has recently upgraded to version 11 which is supposed to be significantly faster than previous versions.  They do it "behind the scenes", so you don't even know it's been upgraded.  Clearing cookies and cache seems to have brought out the full potential.

Damn, it's doing it again.  However, my browser is still lightning fast.  I would say that Chrome and the forum don't play nice, however, it looks like some are having a similar problem w/ other browsers (Firefox).

Actually, my experience has been that Chrome works great for me here and IE, not so much.

I'm assuming you're using Windows.  Create a new user in Window (or the Mac if you're a Mac user) and go into the new profile and check out the forums.  If everything works okay, then you have an issue with your user profile that is causing the problem.  It could be a corrupt preference file or something similar to that.  If the same problem exists with the new user, try uninstalling Chrome and reinstalling it with a fresh download.

I am indeed using Windows 7.  Considering others have chimed in with the same problem, I think I'm going to hold off on your suggestions (too much work and I don't think it will help).  I still think it's a forum problem. In the meantime, I have a few older XP machines that I'll try.

The server was sending the pages compressed and it appears for some reason, the browser wasn't uncompressing, but just downloading as a file.

The hosting provider disabled compression today, so we shouldn't see this error any longer.

If you do, please send along when the error occurred so we can go back and check log files.

Thanks Tim.  The issue appears to have gone away (it had recently been getting much worse).  For me, it started on 12/20/10 and lasted until 12/22/10.  The issue then went completely away until 3/19/11 and has been getting steadily worse since then.

Most importantly, I really appreciate that someone took the time to really look into this and get it fixed.  Thanks AHA.
