Hops for Colorado
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:54:55 am »
What varieties of hop grow best in the Colorado Front Range climate (dry, windy, sunny, cold at night, hot in the day)? Just looking for something that will be pretty reliable and hardy for a first-time attempt at growing. Thanks!

Had great luck in Monument ~7200' with Cascade. Just depend on the usual summer hail storms to do some end shoot pruning for you.

Indeed, lost my Cascade to hail last summer.  :'(
Is that a counter-pressure bottle filler in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

It sounds like a really good climate for hop growing. I would think almost anything would like that. Just watch out for freezes and don't overwater just because your climate is really dry. The ground should stay damp but not wet. The wind beat mine up last year too. I lost some little vines, but most made it, and the ones that did were stronger since the plant focused its energy to fewer vines.
