I really need to find time to sit down and spend some time getting acquainted with Beersmith.  I've looked at it quickly a few times, but I get frustrated and end up just going back to Promash.

i have tried the trial versions of beersmith, promash, brewers workshop. i have tinkered with the hbd recipator.  i have used the brewsmarts website and app that is free and the brew pal iphone app.  i like to use them to get rough ideas, but mostly to print out the base recipe that i can take notes on.  i still tend to do all my calcs by hand.  i guess my question, is what am i missing by not having a software like beersmith or promash?

Software provides a way to record your brews and to perform the calculations relating grains, hops, and yeast to results.  Knowing how to do this by hand is awesome.  It means you likely have a very good understanding of the process and its intricacies. 

In the end it is a preference.

The biggest benefit to me is when tweaking recipes.  When tweaking, I'm constantly adjusting malt/hop/etc. amounts and varieties and can instantly see how a particular change affects the OG, IBU, SRM, etc.  No way would I try to calculate those values by hand for every permutation.

Plenty of other benefits, but I consider that the biggest from my perspective.
