Hmm, I've got my original copy/key I bought a ways back plus a CD Rom version/key that was some recent comp swag.  Upgrade both or just one?  Decisions, decisions...
If it was recent enough, you might qualify for a free upgrade.  Check out the website.  I don't know if it will apply to prizes though.

Well, not that recent (on/after 15 Feb 2011).  Oh well

I really need to find time to sit down and spend some time getting acquainted with Beersmith.  I've looked at it quickly a few times, but I get frustrated and end up just going back to Promash.

Sweet! Free upgrade. 1.4 was ordered on 3.19.

Just bought it, got the pre-order discount. The fact that BS2 will work on the Mac and PC got me to pull the trigger. Now to get used to the first version while I wait a month for the second...

i have tried the trial versions of beersmith, promash, brewers workshop. i have tinkered with the hbd recipator.  i have used the brewsmarts website and app that is free and the brew pal iphone app.  i like to use them to get rough ideas, but mostly to print out the base recipe that i can take notes on.  i still tend to do all my calcs by hand.  i guess my question, is what am i missing by not having a software like beersmith or promash?

Software provides a way to record your brews and to perform the calculations relating grains, hops, and yeast to results.  Knowing how to do this by hand is awesome.  It means you likely have a very good understanding of the process and its intricacies.

In the end it is a preference.

The biggest benefit to me is when tweaking recipes.  When tweaking, I'm constantly adjusting malt/hop/etc. amounts and varieties and can instantly see how a particular change affects the OG, IBU, SRM, etc.  No way would I try to calculate those values by hand for every permutation.

Plenty of other benefits, but I consider that the biggest from my perspective.

So you must be a beta tester.  Can you share what you like about it that is better?

1.  MAC users now have a choice, Of course runs on a wide variety of Windows platforms.

2. Tabbed and Windowed Browsing
One of the biggest features brewers wanted was a way to work on more than one recipe or tool at a time.  After all, you can open a bunch of web pages in your web browser – why not your brewing software?  So I added tabbed and windowed browsing to BeerSmith 2.0.  You can open any recipe, tool or item in a tab or in a separate window and work on it the way you want.  Want to work on three recipes at a time?  No problem – they will open in three different tabs.  Have multiple monitors?  You can open as many windows as you like and spread them across all your screens.

3. Built for expansion.  Want to take notes? now they are unlimited

4. Easy addon's - additional grains etc.
