The American Brown - Recommend hop schedule
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:44:06 pm »
Looking for some recommendations of your favorite combos.
I confess I may be leaning toward the hoppiest side of the style.

Those of you that know the American Brown,
what is your interpretation?

Thanks in advance. 8)

AFAIK, it can be citrusy but doesn't have to be.  Do you want citrusy or no?

I don't mind citrus.  Might be good.

JZ uses Horizon and Amarillo.  I have never used Horizon, does it have any character as a bittering hop?

How about you Denny, I see that Noti has a Galena addition mid way.  Is that pretty important?  Sorry if that is a rude question, sort of like asking a cook if an ingredient is really needed.....I just don't have any Galena around.

Cheers.

I made JZ's recipe once, but used Columbus instead of Horizon just cause.  I was great - very citrusy - got a Silver with it IIRC.

Cascade as a first wort hop.
Citra in the finish for about 5 minutes.
Drop hop with Centennial.

Not at all, man.  I do think they make a difference, based on not using them a couple times.  I haven't found Galena locally lately so I've been subbing in something else and I can't recall what.  I made a batch recently that's on tap now, so later today when I get to another computer I'll see what I used and post here.

You are great!  :)

I like the Hallertauer-type browns, the citrusy browns and definitely the columbus hopped browns.  Brown ale with a mix of hallertauer-type and citrusy hops is just gravy (hop gravy).

Damn, this inspired me to wanna brew an American brown ale.  I was looking for something new and/or different to brew, so I think I found my answer!
What comes to mind that I'd like to brew something similar to is Goose Island's Christmas Ale...hopped up brown ale...num num nummers!

Something about spring weather (warm and bright but major clouds and rain constantly blowing through) makes me crave american brown and american stout with lots of hops.

Well I typically don't drink brown ales, not sure why.  I think it's because I associate brown ale with Newcastle, which sucks, and beers like Rogue's Nutbrown ale, which sucks.  Of course that's my opinion and it doesn't matter.  But they're gross to me.

Rogue's Nutbrown ale

That woukld be Hazelnut Brown, kind of a different animal.  Not that that makes me like it any better.  The guy who came up with the recipe (and whose pic is on the bottle) is a friend and club member.  Around here we call it Bald guy Brown.

Here's what I did for my last batch of Noti Brown.....

Oh yeah, the Hazelnut Brown..yuck, that stuff is nasty.  That's a pretty good looking recipe and I've got a bunch of chocolate laying around and wasn't sure what to use it for, so I think I'll be brewing an American brown here soon.

Thanks very much for the thoughts and suggestions.

Guess I am going with
Mt Hood FWH, Amarillo @ 15, Amarillo and Citra @5 and perhaps a gob of Chinook at FO.
Trying to keep the chocolate to 4%.  I love me some hoppy porter :-[
Will try some special roast for the first time.

Rockin it all on a cake of Dennys favorite.

Cheers to the American Brown. 8)

beersk, those examples of brown ale aren't my favorite either.  I tend to like american HOP brown ale or dark mild but thats it for brown ale types.  Denny, nice hop combo.
