I don't think you'll go wrong with either strain; those two are workhorses for me. If you have the ability to do a split batch and try them side-by-side, I think you'll have a more direct comparison. Good luck.

I brewed a Maibock using the yeast cake (wl833) from a Munich Dunkel and it turned out fantastic!  The dunkel wasnt as malty as Ayinger's Dunkel, but pretty close.  The Maibock is maltier than the Dunkel and has some fruitiness from the malt I suspect, not the hops?

Never used a lager yeast. To tell the truth I'm intimidated.

Euge, don't fear the lager....(I fear the foam)...Just pitch a huge starter and when
you pitch insure your wert is at the lower end of the temperature parameter for the
variety you are using. Add plenty of Oxygen. Then let it ramp up slow
It is gonna take a lot more time than your typical ale...
....so don't be in any hurry RDWHAHB.  U can do it!

Euge, the hardest part of making a lager is getting your courage up to do the first one.  Not so bad once you have done one.  Then later you can get really crazy and do 10.5 hour brew days to make the things like the PU-type Bo-Pils type thingy that I am drinking right now.  Next time it will be even closer, but the brewday might be longer.

The WLP-833 is one fine yeast for malty lagers.  Or even not so malty lagers.  Jeff Renner had a CAP at the club meeting last night that put mine on the sidelines.  Was it the WLP-833 that he used, or the pressure cooker cereal mash?  It was excellent!

Thanks guys! What I want to do is a Czech-style pilsener.

IMO Euge, you are gonna need to play with the water chemistry to get where you
are wanting to go.
It is prolly more than just the lager yeast to make that style......
Edit: for the record, that beer in the 1st post on this thread is from S-189 yeast.
I like it because I do not have to munkey around with a huge starter I can just pitch
2 re-hydrated packs of the dry and RDWHAHB been getting good results. May not be
100% Deutch but it makes good bier.

Only about seven weeks old (brew schedule got a bit backed up!) but considering it went from 1.072-13 it's right tasty already.
I've been doing a wonderful job [back-pat] staying away from it even though it's on tap. I had a pint on May 1st, and maybe one other besides this one. Guess it'll be ein Junibock.

[edited to add:]
For those interested in details, it was about 38/25/25 Vienna/Munich/Pilsner (all Wrmn) with a bit of acidulated, aromatic and honey malts, then Magnum, Tett, Hrsbrkr and Spalt Select. WY2487 x2 + WY2287 pitched at 50° and held at 52° until 1.019, free-rise d-rest for three days, four-day drop to 38 then keg.

If I do it again I'll way up the late hops. Thought I was overdoing it (on purpose) but it comes across rather balanced. You'd think 4.5oz of hops 15m and later would be plenty....

Funny/sad:
I signed up a loooong time ago with that username, but never log on. I actually logged on for the first time in I-don't-know-how-long just to post that pic. When I saw the name I couldn't figure out what it was, but 1vertical jogged my memory.

It appears to be an abbreviation for "Original King Taylor Bombastik," as in, distant relative of Original King Julian the ring-tailed lemur.

It also appears that I was high when I registered.
