Hop Soup

No that is not Hop Soup,  This is Hop Soup

Recipe: Hop Soup (59)
Brewer: Fred Bonjour
Asst Brewer:
Style: American IPA
TYPE: All Grain
Taste: (45.0) This is a not to style beer.  The grain bill is a Dopplebock grain bill.  This gives it a tremendous amount of malt to offset an absolutely insane amount of hops.

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 5.25 gal
Boil Size: 7.00 gal
Estimated OG: 1.103 SG
Estimated Color: 32.4 SRM
Estimated IBU: 213.9 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 55.00 %
Boil Time: 120 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amount       Item                                      Type         % or IBU
15 lbs       Munich Malt I -Weyermann (6.0 SRM)        Grain        70.56 %
2 lbs        CaraMunich Malt (75.0 SRM)                Grain        9.41 %
2 lbs        Pilsener (2.0 SRM)                        Grain        9.41 %
1 lbs        Aromatic Malt (25.0 SRM)                  Grain        4.70 %
1 lbs        Briess Extra Special Malt (130.0 SRM)     Grain        4.70 %
2.1 oz       Carafa (400.0 SRM)                        Grain        0.61 %
2.1 oz       Special B Malt (120.0 SRM)                Grain        0.61 %
16.00 oz     Hallertau (leaf) [3.60 %]  (120 min) (FirsHops         213.9 IBU
2 Pkgs       Nottingham Yeast (Lallemand #-)           Yeast-Ale

Mash Schedule: Infusion 151
Total Grain Weight: 21.26 lb
----------------------------
Infusion 151
Step Time     Name               Description                         Step Temp
120 min       Mash               Add 26.00 qt of water at 155.9 F    145.0 F

Notes:
------
23.4b OG
159 26 qts to hit 145 (3F low)
1 Pound of leaf hops was too much.  1/3 of my boil kettle was hops, thus Hop Soup.  Capped the boil and impedied boil off
This beer has a very mild and smooth bitterness is seems to be something around 50 IBU's (remember this was 1 pound of whole hops put in the dry kettle.)  The aroma has a herbal character that some describe as grassy.
This is an easy drinking, easy to drink, easy to slam beer that will sneak up on you with a reverse slam.

Of course Jim,  They are called session beers, or starters.  Funny thin is all my starters are 5 gallons,  and I drink them.

Steroid Blonde  :D

X2, that is pretty close to my Blonde Ale recipe. Mine comes in about 40 IBU though and 1.045 OG. I use basically the same hop profile.

update on this beer....  it sat in primary for about a month and then "lagered" another month...  (i had an unfinished keg i put in the keezer and dropped the temp down to 42 degrees and the beer sat in there.)  after i emptied the keg (this week), i racked this beer into the keg.  i pulled off a sample.  it tastes fairly light with a moderate hoppiness.  this should be a pretty good "drinking" beer to have around the next couple months.

after it carbonates and i start drinking it, i'll update the thread with a more specific review of it.

cheers.
