I watched Daniel Day Lewis in The Gangs of New York again today.  What an awesome movie!

Did Abe ever visit NOLA?

It's Benjamin Walker, filming now in New Orleans, in 3-D, according to the Times-Picayune.

It's hard to separate the book/movie in question from his real life, not having studied much Lincoln history, but a quick search shows he made two visits to New Orleans by flat boat, where he witnessed a slave auction and had a famous bar fight, then eventually walked home to Illinois.
They used my friend's property in the warehouse district to film interior and exterior shots.  They fixed up the building, painted the whole thing and gave them money for the trouble.  Nice.

Yeah. I'm really getting sick of it to the point where I'm just going to be an old man and not bother watching anything that's only being shown in 3-D. Which will mean not watching any new movies. All for the best considering they haven't made any really new movies in years.

And get off my lawn.

Walked back to Illinois?  Wow...  Wonder why he didn't take the bus?  (sorry, having a Biden moment)   ;)

Your friend with the warehouse - anyone I might know?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. With the recent downturns in ticket sales for 3-D screenings, I'm guessing we're in the last days of it being a big deal. Several big directors have already refused to shoot in 3D. There are tons of complaints about image brightness and it turns out that the movie theaters aren't swapping out the 3D lens on the projectors when they switch movies because the systems require extra precaution and have lockouts to prevent employees from somehow pirating the movie at the lens side.

Well that's good to hear. I figured the industry was all over it like white on rice because of the $3 premium per ticket.

Oh they are and they'd keep the gravy train going, but it appears like a lot of people are stepping off it at least here in the US.

One sign of that was the opening weekend for Pirates 4. 3D ticket sales here in the US were down to 47% of the take. Kung Fu Panda 2 was 45% of the take. Both movies were expected to draw 60% of their ticket sales from 3D.

A complicating factor, of course, is that 3D apparently remains wildly popular overseas. Whether or not that's enough to sustain it, who knows, but I suspect the trend will be for only the big tentpole movies to bother with the 3D process like what we're seeing with IMAX.

Here at least I don't see a lot of interest from people in 3D, except of course for children, but I think kids everywhere like 3D for the same reason they like Chuck-e-cheese and pop tarts.

I've heard that anti-piracy is the real reason behind 3-D. At the moment, it's difficult to impossible to make a pirate copy of a 3-D movie by sneaking a movie camera into the theater.

Well, the primary motivator is really trying to find a means to get butts into seats. Just like in the 50's when movie revenue dropped due to the advent of TV, they're recycling the tricks with 3-D. Anyone want to bet when "Smell-o-vision" comes back? :)

The anti-piracy thing is crazy since most piracy happens out of the contractors working on the movie. You ain't getting a great copy of the movie from a camcorder.

Did Abe ever visit NOLA?

He passed through in a Union ironclad en route to Africa after surviving the assassination attempt, but I doubt they stopped, for obvious reasons.

Wow, that's odd... I thought he flew to Africa on Air Force One.

In the book I read it was a Confederate ironclad and via Hampton Roads, not the Mississippi
