Been a few weeks since I've seen green grass.  Nice pic.  Thanks for the post.

Here's one from last year (no green grass).  I didn't cut a hole in the ductwork for the spigot.  Just wrap it around each time and hold it together with wire.  it springs back to a flat sheet when I'm done and leans up against my workbench.

I froze my ass off brewing on Saturday.  Everything was fine, nice and toasty in the garage until I had to run the hoses to chill.  Then I had water freezing as soon as it was exposed to the air.  I had a hell of a time keeping the hoses from freezing and they did freeze between the point where I was done chilling and draining the boil kettle into the fermenter.

Based on that I decided not to brew today.  I didn't have the energy to wrestle with those hoses again.  I ordered an aquarium pump and I'm going to work on a closed chilling system to make it easier both for the winter and summer months.

This is the brewing area just after I shovelled it the night before brewing:

This was my last brew, a maibock, at the begining of the sparge last week... around 20 degrees outside
I had to cover the mash tun during the mash with a tarp... and it only lost a few degrees over the hour or 90 minutes.

Karl,
What did you treat the OSB with so it doesn't rot?
I'd say something witty down here, but I'm at a bit of a disadvantage in that department.

I just built the box out of free wood a couple of weeks ago (I had a lot of material and a couple of weeks off).  I currently have the top covered with plastic to keep it dry until spring.  I am thinking that I will use a marine grade varnish on the exterior once things warm up.  OSB was not my material of choice, but it beats hauling everything back and forth all winter through the snow (before I built this, all my brewing gear was in a shed at the corner of the lot.  If I have to rebuild it in the spring I may just build the whole thing out of concrete board and tile it.

My wife and I currently live in an apartment. I mash in the kitchen and do the boil on the deck with a turkey fryer that we aren't supposed to have out there (shhhh)!
This was a pale ale I brewed today. It was about 10 degrees outside.
.
I'm surprised no one called the fire department. It probably looks like out apartment is on fire!

Yeah, when it's that cold out it can get pretty foggy.  Started out at 0F for me yesterday.  The propane tank kept freezing in the bucket of water I keep it in.

You cat looks exactly like mine from that picture. My cat hasn't been exposed to my graqins but I let her smell the hops every once in awhile.  She takes a sniff and then runs away.

Your tank kept freezing??

Mine was covered in ice and snow. I only cleared enough of the snow off to reach the valves. I didn't have any trouble with it freezing...

Interesting.

Not the tank itself.  I set it in a tub of water to prevent just that.  The water in the tub would ice over after about 15 min so I had to keep moving it to keep it from getting stuck in the tub.

Since I got my banjo burner the tank will freeze if I don't keep it in the tub.
