My First First Place (Brag Warning)
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:06:27 pm »
I judged a contest in Champaign IL (BUZZ Boneyard Brewoff) and entered some beers.  My kriek got a first place and third in BOS.  I was pretty pleased with this, especially since Jeff Sparrow was judging the category.  It is my second time entering a contest, and this beer got a second the other time I entered it.

Enjoyed judging three flights too, and I happened to help judge the categories that produced the first and second place BOS.  First was a Munich Helles and second was a British Mild, both brewed by the BUZZ Club's own Anthony Benjamin.  I think that means I can tell a good beer when I taste it.

Last part of my brag, I won a stirplate and the two volume set of De Clerck's books in the raffle.  That was one heck of a haul.

Other than a slight hangover this morning, it was a banner weekend.

Congrats. Though is first place really better than second place with a 50? ;)

I want to win that DeClerk set some day.

Any chance you are judging at the Indy state fair next month? We'll be at that. I was thinking about trying to get up to BUZZ but then I got shipped off to Japan so that made the decision pretty easy. Just got back last night.

Congratulations. The prizes were a bonus on top of the 1st place.  I bet you were/are on top of the world!   :)

Congrats Lennie! I judged at BUZZ a few years ago. It's a great comp.

Thanks everyone.

John, actually I got that wrong, the kriek only got honorable mention at your club's contest.  I brought some of the Flanders (that won second) to the after-party and Sparrow didn't like it as much as the kriek.  I put them in that order myself.  I haven't checked to see if the Indy date is open for us.  It'd be nice to see you and Amy again and watch you garner some more medals.

Sean you'd better plan on doing BUZZ again, they were short of judges this time and had a good turnout of something like 240 entries.  They had to start judging early, I came in Friday and did an afternoon flight.  The quality of the three flights I judged was top notch too.

One other score, I scavenged two cases of bottles from the contest.  I spent an hour rinsing them at the motel room.  If that isn't proof that homebrewing is a sickness, I don't know what is.

I enjoyed meeting a fellow Mizzou alum and drinking all your beers.  Congrats on your multiple wins, I was worried you'd hurt your neck from the sheer weight of those medals.  The wife really enjoyed your hefeweizen at the party.  I was impressed with the number of rabid brewers in your club, you guys really have your stuff together.  I can't believe Joshi is married after seeing his dining room and garage.

Well, I was chasing my first best of show at my home competition and I figured with a child on the way, this might be my last chance for a little while :)

I think above all, our club is just a reflection of its founder, Joe Formanek, who apparently also found some success this weekend and was one of the Sam Adam's midwest Longshot finalists (which was also held this past Saturday in Chicago).

I'd love too, but that 24 hour drive is a killer. ;)

Oh thats right, you relocated from IN.  24hr is too long to be in a car, even for beer.

I usually judge at BUZZ.  Couldn't make it this year and felt pretty bad about it.  Feel even worse now that I've read they were short on judges.   I will definitely make it a point to judge at it next year.  Congrats on your first place.
