Star Island was pretty good. I definitely feel like it was a step up from the last few in that elements of the book have clearly stuck around in my brain better than the earlier ones.

I liked it OK too.  I like the whole Florida Wacko genre.  He should bring Skink back.
So then I read Karen Russell's Swamplandia and enjoyed it until about half way through then did not enjoy the second half.

Have you read any of Tim Dorsey's or Paul Levine's Florida wacko books?  Good stuff!

Skink inspired me to tie myself to the center span at the top of the Card Sound Bridge when Hurricane Charley blew through.  Unfortunately Charley blew through Cayo Costa instead...

I've always been drawn more to the Travis McGee side of "Florida" novels. For a while that meant James W. Hall and Randy Wayne White. I always preferred RWW and Doc Ford over Hall's Thorn, but lately both have been wearing thin. Shame too cause I loved the early novels

Yes to Tim Dorsey, no to Paul Levine so far.
That reminds me of the time I was hitch-hiking across the country and thought it would be cool to see a hurricane, so I went to Galveston.  Fortunately the hurricane went to Corpus Cristi.  That was Celia.  In 1970.  I could be part of the Florida Wacko genre.

   I read "One Second After" sometime last year and really enjoyed it. 

If you liked that one, I think you would really like "Patriots" by James Rawles. It's pretty much a doomsday book, about the economy crash. There's been a group of survivalist in northern Idaho, preparingfor it for years, and when crap hits the fan, the guys are ready. It's a VERY good read. What I really like about it, you can easily see it happening tomorrow.
 Also, Critical Mass was very good, if you like end of the world type stuff.

Thanks!  The local library doesn't have Patriots so I put it on my future reading list, but they have Critical Mass.   I'll pick it up when I pickup a couple of books for my trip to MI next week

I read a review on that book a few years ago and then forgot to write it down and promptly forgot the name and author.

The Devil in the White City

Funny you mention that one.  It's the book I plan to start reading on the plane to S.D. tomorrow.

I finished this while in several airports Sunday and Monday.  It's a great historical novel.  Really interesting all the way to the end.  There are two, maybe three stories going on through the book, each one a good read by itself, but together even better.

I'm reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" to my kids.  Again.

Other than that, I don't recommend anything on my reading list.  For example, "Folding catalysis by transient coordination of Zn2+ to the Cu ligands of the ALS-associated enzyme Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1"

I just finished Dean Koontz Frankenstein The Dead Town. If you've read the other four in the series it's a decent finish, if you've not, probably not the place to start, start with book 1.
