Kegging from Freezementer?
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:55:51 am »
Right now I'm using 2,  6.5gal carboys in my freezementer but I have to lift them out to siphon to kegs.  They are just too low to the ground to get a good siphon going.  I'm thinking about going to 1/2 bbl kegs so I can ferment 2 beers at a time but I know I won't be able to lift those.  Is there a better way that i'm missing?  C02?

Get a carboy cap that fits snugly on the carboy, then use CO2 to push from the carboy to the keg.  Very gently, a couple of psi should do it.

Exactly :)

Drew, have you gone above 5 psi?  Does it push the carboy cap off or blow up the carboy?  I have a bad carboy I'm going to test in a month or so . . .

Yeah, the carboy caps will blow  ~5 psi, but man do I hate depending on that as a safety mechanism.

Yeah, I plan to do it in my garbage can so I don't have to clean up the mess. :)  I wonder how high I will have to go to get it to shatter? ;D

Thanks for the response guys.  I thought about that, just haven't tried it yet.  That reminds me, I really need to invest in a SS racking cane plus I only have my 5lb CO2 tank filled right now and I was afraid of using too much gas.  If I go the 1/2 bbl route, I'll have to get my 15lb checked and filled.

If by checked you mean re-proofed, you can just swap it out at the local welding gas place.  It's my preferred method anyway, and I never have to have my tanks proofed that way.

I like the gas fitting installed on the carboy cap. That really makes this setup special.
