Traverse City, Michigan breweries
« on: June 27, 2011, 05:07:30 pm »
I'm going to the Traverse City area for the fourth weekend and I was wondering what's good, great, and not worth my time.  I have heard of North Peak and Right Brain, but any good suggestions would be nice.

Both NP and RB had gone through brewer changes last fall, so maybe they have gotten back in the grove.

It you have time, and want to see some other part of the area, spend the 45 minutes to go to Shorts in Bellaire, best one up there in my opinion.

Edit - there is the Jolly Pumpkin place on old mission.  Go up that way.  Very good scenic drive.  Are the cherries on?  A couple of good wineries also.

Thanks Jeff - I'll try to talk my wife into going to Shorts.

I've never been impressed with the beers from North Peak in Traverse city but I like their bottled beer. I think someone else brews it though. I agree with Jeff, Shorts is your best bet for great beer and the drive up into wine country is gorgeous. I wouldn't hesitate to Hit NP for food though, great food.

Thanks Jeff - I'll try to talk my wife into going to Shorts.

The drive is scenic, if you go around the SE side of Torch Lake, you can see some very blue water as that lake is really deep.  If you want to treat her to good food there is a place just up the street from Short's called Lulu's that we had a really good meal at.  Want to go back for dinner sometime.  Shorts has good pizza and pub food, and we like the atmosphere, and the beer is excellent.

Thank you Jeff for recommending Shorts.  My wife, brother and sister-in-law, and I really enjoyed this place.  We loved the IPA and many of the others.  We also had lunch there and the pub food was top notch as well as the atmosphere.  My wife and I are already planning on stopping back in August on our way to the UP.

I'm glad you liked it.  They were closed for a week or so in the winter for a remodel, and we have not been back.

It is a place with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, good pub food, and really good beer.  It is in a pretty area, not far from Traverse city, but just far enough.
