Yeast date question
« on: March 01, 2023, 07:47:36 am »
Hi, i came across a box of Red Star Montrachet yeast the other nite that i forgot i had. It is dated 2016. I hear mixed reviews on if i can still use it or not. Is it possible that the yeast could still be good? Or would i be wasting my time? Thank you!

If it was refrigerated, it might still be OK, but marginally so.

If it was not refrigerated, I would not take the risk.

Personally I would throw it.  I'm not going to invest 5 hours into a batch of beer (not to mention grains and hops) just to take a chance on iffy yeast.
Far better to dare mighty things....

It’s $1.69 a pack at Northern Brewer. For less than two bucks I wouldn’t use it.

If you do choose to use a yeast that old in your homemade wine, I recommend you proof it first.
