Coast to Coast Road Trip
« on: August 02, 2011, 02:04:04 pm »
Well, I'm off to find the Wholly Hop Grail along the way on my trip from the Left Coast to the other side. Stops along the way:

Spokane, WA
Glacier National Park
Mount Rushmore
Niagara Falls
Rehoboth Beach, DE (I understand there might be a decent brewpub here)

Any recommendations?

Right before you get to Rehoboth, stop at:
If driving over the bay bridge on Rt 50: Evolution Craft Brewery in Delmar, DE

If driving into Delaware on I-95: Iron Hill in Wilmington or Newark.

If not really trying to drive the straightest route: Victory in Downingtown, PA

If your navigator is drunk: Magic Hat in Burlington, VT

I stayed a couple blocks from there and in spite of the distance preferred to go downtown to the Vermont Pub and Brewery (Gregg Noonan's).
Ebenezers in Maine is supposed to be nice, too, but check the hours before you drive all the way out into no man's land to find it (like I did).

If you travel at night be sure to tune in to Coast To Coast AM with George Noory!

They are having their annual Belgian Festival August 19-28.  But this is a little off course from your final destination of Rehoboth, DE.

Madison, Wisconsin. A nice place to visit and lots of interesting Wisconsin beers. I especially like the Old Fashioned, on Capitol Square. At least 30 Wisconsin beers on tap and over 100 more in bottles.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

And it's not far from New Glarus, which is a nice little visit in itself, both for the brewery and the town.

I'd also go to Three Floyds off of I-80 near the Indiana/Illinois border

I would end up someplace like Asheville, NC over Reheboth Beach, DE, but you're pretty north, so that might not be in the cards.

Going to Niagara Falls, you'll be passing by Southern Tier and will be in the general vicinity of Smuttynose/Portsmouth Brewing, both of which I'm very fond.

Portsmouth is almost 600 miles away from Lakewood (ST).  But if you make the trip out this way, it's not too far from Ebenzers in Lovell or Allagash in Portland, as well as Maine Brewing.  And you can hit White Birch in Hooksett on your way to the coast.

Then he could get on I-94 and hit Greenbush in Sawyer, the Livery in Benton Harbor, Paw Paw in Paw Paw, Bells in Kalamazoo, Arcadia in Battle Creek, Dark Horse in Marshal, Local Pub and Brewery in Jackson, 4 or 5 places in Ann Arbor, and OG in Milan has you head down to Toledo.  Then again, that might be too much.

It's been a very long time since I was in the Buffalo area, but my faves back in the day were Pizza Plant (they had two locations) and Alternative Brews.
It's not a popularity contest, it's beer!

How much time do you have for this trip? I'm hoping at least 6 months.  Oh, and the local homebrew club (mine) meets at said Rehoboth Beach brewpub from October - May, if your interested and it works out I'll give you details.
