I use beersmith. I have the older version and I like it. others here have upgraded and seem to like 2.0 as well.

**EDIT** ahh didn't see the free part. well I think beersmith has a free trial and it's not pricey last I checked

Yes, BeerSmith 2.0 is the way to go. it is only $27.50 or something and had a free 30 day trial, but it is a great program and worth every cent. I contacted customer service with a question and they got back to me like 2 hours, well worth the few bucks.

I used to use Brew Recipator before I switched over to BeerSmith.  Beersmith is worth every cent, but for a real basic calculator Recipator worked for me to begin with.

i use brewtarget now. i tried the samples of beersmith, promash, brewers workshop.  this is easy and works fine. like the printout because i always check the math and there is room to right on it. i have also used brewsmarts which is pretty nice and their is a link to the iphone, and brewpal on the iphone is pretty nice.

I used to use beertools.com. The free version only lets you save a couple recipes. I used beersmith now and won't go back. Once you buy beersmith, its free  ;) - as in, one time purchase, no subscription.

for free web-based: hopville.com
for paid for, I'd say Beersmith is the single best homebrew purchase I've made.
Or, you could pick up Daniels' Designing Great Beers and he'll teach you how to write recipes with just pen and paper.

If you can run your own web server you might want to give BrewBlogger (www.brewblogger.net) a try.  I run it on my laptop and it is very good.

I'll have to give some of those a try.  Most of the one's I've used work, but some are a bit lacking when it come to hop and malt varietals.  Then you end up spending all your figuring out what to substitute in for the missing items.
