I do disease research, my PhD is in biochemistry.

Now you've done it...don't be surprise if a bunch of guys come up to you at NHC next year and show you body parts and ask if it's infected.   ;D
I'll have to have a badge made that says "Not that kind of doctor". ;)

just wanted to offer my congrats, and thanks for helping the medical community.

the title of my dissertation is:

"Characterization of Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Associated Mutants of the Human CuZn Superoxide Dismutase Monomer by Molecular Dynamics Simulations"

;D

It's not the greatest title in the world but it is accurate and I was on a deadline so it's what I'm stuck with now.
Cool, where can I get a copy?

Almost went into bioengineering too.

It's not published yet, but you can get chapter 2 here:

Structural Changes to Monomeric CuZn Superoxide Dismutase Caused by the Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-Associated Mutation A4V

Once the dissertation is published I'm going to write up some of the chapters and submit for publication in peer reviewed journals.

Tom,
I find this fascinating...

Find the connection Tom....I think it is really the culpret.

Congrats, Tom. From what little I can comprehend, I can tell it's good work. Best of luck!

A little late here, but congratulations Tom on finishing your thesis and passing your exam!  Hope your next step is not too far away.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike. :) I'll be sticking around UW for the foreseeable future, and have no plans to leave the area after that.

Great to hear!  What beer did you celebrate with?  Westy 12?  Homebrew?  All of the above and more?  Hope our paths cross sometime soon!

I don't work on anything more advanced than yeast. ;)

I celebrated with Deus, which is fine but not worth the price IMO.  It's a good show though, and worth it when the alternative is champagne.  We went out to Big Time Brewery after that, where I had a few of their beers (they still have Old Sol ;D ) and called it a night pretty early, but then the Deus was cracked by 1 PM.

I turned in 6 copies of my completed dissertation today.  One for scanning into microfilm, the rest for binding.  One each for the UW library, the department of biochemistry, my boss, my dad, and me.  The degree will officially show up on my transcript as "conferred" in a couple of weeks, but as far as I know there is nothing left to do but wait.

My postdoc paperwork isn't worked out yet, so as of this Friday I'll be officially unemployed.  I think they still expect me to show up for work though. :)
