"Never Again" beers
« on: August 16, 2011, 06:02:51 am »
Sunday evening I felt pretty good after going through my bottle of 2010 Cuvee van de kaizer... That is, until 4am the next morning. I dunno whether it was due to a crappy fermentation (11% ABV) or something else, but I had the worst hangover I've ever had my entire life. Cold sweats, dry heaving, shakes, unable to lie down but feeling like I needed to pass out, and then of course the headache. Oy vey. I am never touching anything by Carolus ever again.

This also happened to me on a night when I had six bottles of Fischer. It was at an event my wife asked me to go to ("asked") that ended up being crap (she apologized to me the next day) but while I was there I soothed the suffering with those six bottles... Except the next morning I thought I was going to die.

So those are my two "never again" beers. Anybody else?

Fischer has never made me feel that way, of course, I've never drank 6 bottles of it either (I only see it in ~600ml swing tops here).

Infinium is on my 'Never Again' list - not because it made me feel horrible, but because I plain didn't enjoy it & certainly didn't think it was worth the $$ I paid for it.

This thread is a bit funny in that the Cuvee beer you mention was something like number 6 on your "this has been a perfect day because..." thread!  :D  Still, as some (longish?) fellow said, "into each life a little rain must fall".

I have a handful of beers that I just plain didn't like at all that I would not resample.  An oldish SA Triple Bock was like a maple-soy marinade, not enjoyable at all.  The only beer I recall that I had to simply pour down the drain after one sip was Hanssens Oude Kriek, which is quite definitely a never again for me.  Maybe a little too "authentic" for my tastes...I wouldn't be surprised to find out I'm just not into funky, sour beers.

Anything by Atwater Block. I've had three of their beers and they were all contaminated.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

Yeah, Sunday it was a great beer, Monday it was a mistake. Know what I mean?

Not sure I have any never again beers.  Well, not because it made me sick, but because it's gross: Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat.

I attempted to drink Dave's Cave Creek Chili beer twice.  Truly awful the first time.  A few years later pretty much the same the second time.

Cherry Wheat - ewww.  I'm not even sure I tried it, so I can't say "never again" but I have most definitely refused it.

Goose Island Pepe Nero.  Never again.  Just nasty, but YMMV.

Yep, same here.

Regarding the Carolous... are you sure you didn't get food poisoning from something else?

Well it's definately not for everyone but when served on draft, the cherry is a little more subdued.

Well, my wife and I ate the same food and she was totally fine the next day, so I'm guessing no on the food poisoning.

Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Red. I'm not into sours really but can usually stomach them, but this one is just gross.
