Thinking of your recipe, buying hops.
« on: August 24, 2011, 02:56:29 AM »
Well being a newbie I got to thinking about hops and recipes. Big oops on my part I need 600#  for a modest IPA. The thing is I need them this year and now. My recipe calls for the hardest to get hops, and they are all spoken for now what? I hope to get them by hook or crook but you got to think about the availability of your raw materials.

Just another thing to think about.

Only about 10 bbls at a time, this would be a second beer and looking to sell 500 bbls a year. Figuring 10% loss or excess. Depends on extract effienciecy

Extract efficiency is much greater on large systems. On a 10bbl system you might get 2-3x the extract efficiency as you would on a homebrew scale. The only way to really know would be to brew a batch and send a sample to a lab to calculate IBU.

Supply line issues are going to be a normal issue with brewing, especially with hops, with so few being grown and so much demand, especially with the proprietary strains. If I were to make recipes, I would tailor them around well-established and non-proprietary strains, like the ones released by the USDA in Corvallis.

Hang in there for hops. There may be a few hundred pounds that break away in November. Keep your eyes open. First come first serve.

Majority is going to be flavor and aroma so no lucking out on extract effiency. I didn't want to use extracts but I guess we have accept the real world realities.

Pautucket, Hopefully next spring, maybe as close as Eau Claire at TM's place. (If he will sell it). :)  !!

Marc,

The current law in WI does not allow me to distribute your beer. If I could I would LOVE to.

Fruit extract vs real fruit. I was just offered 200 lb of Black Current for fruit beer. Price for 1lb was $4.50.
So compare extract price and real fruit price.

Good Luck on the new venture!  :)

I'll be on the lookout for your beer when it becomes available if I can get it.
