Sad story but a bud of mine hit a baby deer. He brought it home and roasted it whole. OMG was it frickin good.

Not sure if it was legal or not.

Depending upon jurisdiction, it is legal to keep a road killed deer.

Here in Illinois you call the State Police for a permit.

If you have a permit does that mean you can swerve?  ;D

When I worked at the power plant in Central Florida, the power plant was at the waaaay end of a very long road through the boonies.  Many of our vehicles were damaged by deers on the way to/from work on the second and third shifts.  Many awesome barbecues were had by the shift workers at the plant (and financed by collision insurance).  Power plant shift workers are a unique breed.

In 15 years of driving to work and back I managed to miss Bambi.  Although he tried mightily to sacrifice himself on my hood numerous times, I was smarter than he;  I had a deer whistle mounted on my truck!

Urban sprawl has since devoured the boonies and chased Bambi (and me) away.

My father was a power plant shift worker.
You're absolutely 100% correct.

Those whistles seem to only attract deer, here in Minnesota.

My understanding here in Iowa is if it broke you, you bought it.  It's yours if you want it.  Many times there isn't much left though.

Luckily I've never hit one.  Yet.

In New Jersey, well... damned if I know. I learned to drive in PA. Apparently I can see the critters much better than 99% of the other drivers in this state. But I guarantee you I'd get the cops called on me on account of being crazy if I stopped and strapped one to the hood.

Now, I love venison, but I have no idea where I could get one butchered around here, and I've never field dressed one either. If I had confidence in either, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

If it was fresh and in my garage think I could dress a deer. Never done it before but my friend google can show me how. Ideally you'd want one that just got smacked on the head and the rest of the body isn't tenderized if you know what I mean. ;)

Guess I need to find out what the laws are in my area. Bet you can't touch the meat legally.
