Would you use it?
« on: September 06, 2011, 04:17:20 am »
Saturday morning I run down to the local LHBS to get some Wyeast 1968. They were out, grabbed two pouches of 1028 instead, suddenly decided to do a ten gallon batch of bitter, OG 1.034.Smacked both packs, do my honey-do's, two hours later start the mash. A five hours later, chilling the wort and neither bag has started to swell. Run up to a different LHBS, pick up some DME and a couple packs of S04 (insurance). Put the wort in the conical, set the temp controller, mixed up the DME (1/2 gallon starter OG 1035), added plenty of O2 and the two pouches of 1028. Sunday morning nothing going on in the starter, checked the gravity, no change. Pitched the S04. Monday, the starter started bubbling, this morning its starting to clear. Question is, should I save the 1028 yeast for a future batch, or pitch it?

Since you already pitched the S04 I'd just hang onto the starter for a future batch.  Throw it in the fridge and a couple days before your next brew day decant off the beer and throw in some more cool wort to get things moving again.

I think when he asked if he should "pitch it" he meant "throw it away" not pitch pitch it.
I think he should save it, too.

I agree.  Pitch it, not pitch it!

Poor choice of words on my part. So the consensus is its saveable?

Yessir.  Just put in the fridge for a couple days like tygo said and add new wort to it a few days before you want to use it.
