Anvil
« on: September 15, 2011, 01:47:12 am »
I just finished watching the Anvil movie.  Has anyone else seen it?  I thought it was really good, strangely inspirational for a movie about a band that has seen so little success.  The lead singer (my buddy's uncle, for the record) is so optimistic with no real reason to be, he just believes in himself and the band and doesn't give up.  Good story.

Okay?

Look, your whole life is a total failure, this is an absolute truth.  You can give up now or you can drive it into the ground and maybe eventually get up on top the pile for a little while before it all comes crashing down.  Besides, you come from nothing, you go back to nothing, what've you lost?  Nothing!  So quit whining and go swing your stick until you hit something.  If something hits you, punch it in the face and continue beating your way to the top.

I thought that movie was great.  They're kinda like the real version of Spinal Tap.

Yeah, I saw it awhile ago in the local budget theatre.  It was awesome.

There's a documentary in a similar vein about an aspiring filmaker called American Movie that you might be into if you like Anvil.

If you were curious, I asked my buddy about what has happened since.  They are able to support themselves with the music now, instead of working to support touring.  They've played for some big crowds opening for better known bands, and do some headlining for their own, smaller tours.  And the last time he saw his uncle, the first thing he said was "Man, you wouldn't believe it but I met Paul McCartney... and he knew who I was!!!" :)
