One thing you can do is build the cabinets yourself, because they aren't that hard to build and they don't require super equipment or special bits. Then get with a cabinet maker for your door and drawer fronts.

That sounds pretty reasonable. And plus we can make do with cabinets with no fronts for a while if need be.. hrm...

Is crown molding easier to make than cabinet fronts?

I would never attempt to make crown, think about the profile you're after. IMO, better to purchase and install. Most carpenters don't make their own trims. It's one thing to use a router or router table on an edge and quite another to make mouldings.
