I had read that 1pt to 1/2 cup was about 1.040, but I didn't check the gravity so I don't know. I will add another liter tonight with less than a cup and see what its gravity is. My dad used to have dozens of old whiskey bottles & gallon jugs of carlo rossi sangria. I'll have to see if he still has any of them or if his wife finally made him get rid of them.

Don't measure the extract, weigh it.  I use .75 oz./cup of water.

It might be worthwhile for someone with the clout not to have edits undone change the instructions on Homebrewopedia: http://wiki.homebrewersassociation.org/YeastStarter

And while they're at it, they can fix all the other stuff that's wrong with those instructions.

I use 3oz DME to 1Liter of water. I use a digital scale to weigh out my DME. I always add a little extra water, so I end up with just over a Liter of wort after boiling, that has a finishing gravity of about 1.030.

I had used 100gr DME/1000ml H2O using a 15min boil..  When i finally measured, 15min boil = 750ml @ OG 1.055.   :o       I  never accounted for the boil off vol at 15min nor the resultng higher gravity. DOH!!!!

I now boil 1250ml H20 to to get 1000ml after a 15min boil.  I also adjusted my DME to 90gr /1000ml  and now get an OG ~1.035.  YMMV

Are 15min boils necessary sanitze the starter wort?

-Cheers

Not really.  Anything over 5 minutes or so of rolling boil will probably do the job.  I go 10 just to be on the safe side.

Thats exactly where I got it from lol, Palmer's How to Brew.

That's a well-known error in HTB. 1/2 cup DME in 1 pt of wort will have an SG of ~1.071, and 1/2 cup added to 1 pt water will have a gravity of ~1.059. Shooting for a 1.030-1.040 wort, you'd want to use about 1/2 cup per liter/quart.

Has there been a problem with someone reversing edits? I just did a quick rewrite on it.

Thank you! I didn't necessarily foresee a problem on this wiki, but after having edits constantly reversed on the one Wikipedia entry I ever edited -- where I had expertise -- I have since not bothered with wikis. The rewrite is a help and makes AHA that much more authoritative.

Got the final numbers for the Belgian. Went from 1.079 down to 1.016 so all went well. Tasted it and I think its going to be really nice after its in secondary for a month or so. I have a gallon wine jug for starters now so shouldn't have a worry next time. Gonna need one shortly for a Pliny clone. :)
