Can you eat mudbugs one handed?

Doug Lindley of the Crescent City Homebrewers showed me how back in `93.

 now that is talent.

I make a complete mess with 2 hands.

 But I love them so.

Pop a bug - sip a beer...  repeat!

Sure do wish they'd have another NHC in NOLA again.  I'll swim all the way to get there if I have to!

 The whole thing?!?

 Dang.

No, just the tail meat.

 Oh :-[ :-[ :-[

No, too much spice concentrates up in there for me.  I do stick a pinky finger in there and scoop out some head fat from time to time though.  Good stuff!

Maybe we should start a mudbug thread?

I would love to try this but I can't imagine where I would get green peanuts in the NYC area.

check out the farmers markets. Look to the asian stands, At least here in norcal they are all over at the right time of year. I Could be wrong but I think of NYC as THE PLACE YOU CAN GET ANYTHING!!!

Also, African markets should have them.

Wife was disgusted at first, and then she tasted one. Then she ate half the batch (!). These coulda been boiled for another hour, though, as they weren't quite to that mushy shell stage. Good stuff though. It's been a while since I last had them, and I realized last night that they remind me a lot of cooked chickpeas. Perhaps some peanut-based tahini or falafel? Or would that just be fried peanut butter?

My wife's best friend was in africa for the peace corps for a few years and my wife went to visit her. Apparently there is a peanut preperation there that involves beating the nuts in a big morter and pestle until the fat separates from the protein and they end up with a firm dough which is then fried in the peanut oil. sounds kind of like falafel to me.

As a result of a conversation with boulderbrew and searching for some fresh nuts from this year's crop, I found out that there is a peanut shortage. This is the first I have heard of it but those in the grocery business have already got the heads up.

Peanut butter prices are expected to double and things with peanut butter in them will increase also.

Apparantly the drought caused low quality and yields, even in neighboring Georgia; (AKA Jawww-Jah).

Google "peanut shortage".

I found some green peanuts at the Maku'u farmers market around the corner from my home.  $5/lb or $9 for a #2 bag.  I almost bit the bullet and bought a bag, except the vendor/farmer, a Filipino women insisted on lecturing me in pigin that there is no such thing as green peanuts, "Peanuts no green!  Peanuts brown!  Peanuts ALWAYS brown.  No green peanuts...  Why you say peanuts green?  Peanuts never green.  Peanuts always brown! You silly you think peanuts green, ha, ha, ha..."

I finally handed the bag back and said, "No thank you.  If you want to sell peanuts at $4.50 a pound you need to work on your sales pitch."

Sounds similar to the wet- vs. fresh-hop dialog.

;D

Except "green" already has the meaning "new" or "fresh".  If you want to start calling them green hops instead, I'll support that. ;)

Any good Asian grocery store (of which there are plenty in the NY/NJ area)  should have them.

If you add the salt at the begining of the boil as stated in that recipe your peanuts will get way too salty. Let your peanuts boil for a couple of hours first, then add and mix in the salt.  When the peanuts are done, turn off the heat and allow the peanuts to sit in the brine until they have all sunk to the bottom of the boiling pot.  Then drain and feast!

Don't know nothin' bout no sweet tea or soda pop...  BEER!
