While I enjoyed The Trappist, I'd put Brick Store in Decatur, GA up next to it any day.

While pricey, I think The Birch in Norfolk, VA might be worth a nod. Here's a current DRAFT list:
brewer name style abv price glass
Porterhouse Wrasslers XXXX Irish Dry Stout 5.8% $7.00 pint
Hof Ten Dormaal Amber Belgian Amber 7.5% $8.00 goblet
Professor Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weiss German Berliner Weiss 5.0% $7.00 goblet
Nøgne Ø Pale Ale Norwegian Pale Ale 6.0% $8.00 goblet
BFM/Terrapin Spike and Jerome Rum Barrel Aged Sour 12.1% $9.00 goblet
De Ranke Guldenberg Belgian Tripel 8.5% $8.00 goblet
Emelisse Espresso Stout Dutch Coffee Stout 10.0% $9.00 goblet
Ettaler Curator German Doppelbock 9.0% $7.00 pilsner
De Glazen Toren Special Eindejaar Belgian Imp. Saison 9.0% $8.00 goblet
Etienne-Dupont Cidre Brut French Champagne Cider 6.9% $9.00 goblet
Harviestoun Bitter and Twisted Scottish IPA 4.2% $7.00 goblet
Hofstetten Hochland Bio Austrian Lime Honey Bock 9.0% $7.00 pilsner
Alvinne Morpheus Wild Belgian Flemish Red 5.9% $8.00 goblet
't Gavernhopke Koerseklakske  Belgian Wit 5.5% $8.00 goblet
Del Ducato Nuova Mattina Ita. Chamomile Saison 5.9% $8.00 goblet
Schlenkerla Krausen Germ. Smoked Helles 5.4% $7.00 tulip
Evil Twin Katz Pis Danish IPA 6.5% $9.00 goblet
Kiuchi Red Rice Japanese Golden Ale 7.0% $8.00 tumbler
Del Borgo Enkir Ita. Einkorn Wheat 6.1% $9.00 goblet
La Rulles Estivale Belgian Blonde 5.2% $9.00 goblet
Hantverksbrggeriet Julnarren Swedish Strong Ale 7.0% $9.00 goblet

And Mekong in Richmond, VA never fails to satisfy! Here was a Sept 22 draft board
It's not a popularity contest, it's beer!

I've been to 11 out of the 20 in the article.  They were all pretty amazing.

We'll be in Grand Rapids tomorrow.  Is that the best place?  I haven't researched it yet.

Been to few of those, but of course, I feel like they miss a few from the country's second largest city!

Hopcat, Founders and Brewery Vivant would be on my list downtown.  All within walking distance of each other, but Brewery Vivant is about 1 mile from Hopcat.  Should be no problem with the fine weather we are having.

North of town the Hideout is said to be good, have not been.

Edit - Forgot to say bring your spare liver!

East Coast bias was there.  Nothing from SD or Seattle?

Naked City from Seattle was there.  It's a really good place.  I would certainly put it on a list of the best beer bars in Seattle, but I'm not sure it would be my #1.  I hope Don isn't reading this. :)

Sorry Tom, I missed that.  Not familiar with it, was thinking of the ones that get more press.

No worries.  There was a pretty clear East coast bias though.

Have you ever been to Prague (Czech Republic, Europe)? If you would like ti visit a city where approximately 300 bars and restaurant have their home-brewed beer then go there! You might be there for a week or even a month and will get served a different sort of beer at each location. This might be the best place in the world for beer enthusiasts!

Nice list. I've been to a few...and would like to hit some of the others.

Anyone see DRAFT Mag's 100 best beer bars 2011 yet?
