How long to store slurry?
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:18:34 pm »
How long is too long to store slurry in the fridge before it can be re-used. I have about a quart each of WY 1450, WY 1007, and WLP037. Each are at least 2 months old. They are stored in ziploc-brand plastic jars (with screw-on caps). Assuming I make a starter, should I be ok?

If it is the color of peanut butter, I'd pitch it.  For yeast you don't want to be PC - you want as white as possible.
Beer...Now there's a temporary solution!

I've kept and successfully reused yeast as old as 5 months.  I don't necessarily recommend that, but it worked for me.

I've made beer from yeast cake slurry that was over 6 months old, but I made a starter from it. The nose knows. If it smells good and appears to be good (no mold) chances are it is good, but I would certainly make a starter from a yeast cake over 6 months old. Not to say you can't do it because I'm sure it can be done , but I would be concerned about the yeasts viability.

you do mean dump/toss it, not 'pitch' it, right?

Bad choice of words, yes, dump it.
